Two stories popped up today (July 3) that demonstrate the accelerating movement toward greater and greater sustainability of today’s dairy farms. The first is from the Netherlands, home of so many great dairy farmers in Washington state and around the world. This farmer installed a three story floating dairy farm in the middle of Rotterdam harbor.
The other story reveals efforts to improve sustainability in beekeeping and dairies. Note the key here is educating non-farmers about these efforts and the role of technology in both increasing efficiency and environmental performance. Non-farmers often show they don’t really understand that continually improving efficiency is absolutely essential if a farm is survive in a highly competitive global marketplace. Equally, few non-farmers living in our cities understand the very great changes that have occurred and are occurring on our dairy farms that provide ever great environmental performance. It’s one of our main tasks at Save Family Farming to help close that gap between producer and consumer.
